Sign Of Teenage Depression - Depression In Adolescent

By Leeanne Utiger
Depression is a mental illness that can affect anyone, at any age, not just adults. This means, that yes - children and teenagers, otherwise known as adolescents can also suffer from depression. Depression in teenagers and children is just as, if not at times as important to find a treatment for as is depression in an adult. However, before an adolescent or a child can be treated appropriately for depression, the symptoms of depression in a teenager or child have to be recognized.

You will be able to see signs in an adolescent or a child as to whether they have depression or are highly likely to be suffering from depression. Signs of depression in a teenager and a child can be similar and easily recognized once you know what you should be observing.

Teenagers and children with depression will cease to function adequately appropriately just as adults will not function adequately if they suffer from depression. Were you aware that if depression is in a household and affects a parent, a teen or child in that same household is more susceptible to obtaining an unbalanced mind, therefore possibly ending up with depression.

You will learn to recognize the signs of depression in a teenager/adolescent or child very easily. All you have to do is observe the actions and behavior of the teenager/adolescent or child concerned.

It is important that you see signs of depression in an adolescent or a child as early as is possible. Signs of depression in an adolescent or a child can include things like, lack of attention span in class. This is a common sign of something being wrong with the child or teen in the first place. Constant lack of attention or concentration can indicate a problem which could be depression. Some teenagers will show signs of depression in the way they present themselves and dress. Many teenagers who suffer from depression will often constantly wear clothing which lacks any color, and consists mainly of black or darker colors. Appearance and change of appearance can be a sign of depression in adolescents and/or teens and children.

A child with depression will show signs of depression through their behavior and inability to communicate or show any emotion other than sadness and unhappiness. A child with depression will hold little enthusiasm for going out to play with friends.

Other signs of depression in adolescents/teenagers or a child can include: extremely low self esteem, low self worth, hopelessness, and often negative self views of themselves.

Children and teenagers or adolescents will often show signs of anger and irrational behavior when they are suffering form depression. They may become critical and abusive and possibly even act violently towards family members. These are also signs and symptoms that a child or teenager may show of having possible depression.

And a few other signs of depression in a child or teenager can be lack of achievement and participation in classroom studies and extra curricular activities.

Above I have mentioned a few signs and symptoms that over time you should be able to recognize as being possible signs of your child or teen having depression. Become aware of these signs of depression and if you think you know of a child or teen that possibly has depression, I suggest you act on the signs you observe and hopefully get some sort of medical diagnosis, and if need be some treatment. To get treatment for any level of depression, you will have to have observed these signs that could pinpoint depression for a while. You cannot possibly conclude that a child or teen has depression through observing a couple of these signs on the odd occasion.
