Some people are born to speak in public while others are not. You may think you will never have to be a public speaker of any kind, so therefore do not have to learn any skills or techniques related to public speaking. But hang on - take a step back and think a little. Public speaking is not only about performances or speeches for strangers. Public speaking can include reading a eulogy at a funeral, or making a speech as the best man at a wedding. These are all public speaking roles that you could be required to do at any given time of your life. So do not think that techniques and skills for being able to speak appropriately in public are not for you.

In this article I will go briefly into the skills and techniques of being a successful public speaker and then in an additional segment I will provide for you a list of public speaking tips for your reference.

Public Speaking Skills and Techniques:
There are a few skills and techniques that are very beneficial to you once you learn how to make good use of them when you get into public speaking. You will need to have the skill of talking clearly. This will also keep the audience you are speaking to at least semi interested in what you are saying. The rest comes down to how entertaining you are, or how informative you are when you are trying to keep the audience interested in what you are speaking about. If you lack the skill and the techniques involved in creating and holding interest in any given audience, your public speaking days will be over before they ever really started. You need to have a clear, strong voice so the audience can at least understand what you are saying. If you lack the skills and techniques of speaking clearly when making a speech to the public you will also lose their interest in what you have to say. If you mumble and are audibly unclear with your words, people will become restless and will not want to hear anything you have to say at all.

You will also need to learn the skills and techniques relating to being able to hold the audiences attention. Learn the techniques to keep them focused on you and your speaking. Every now and then while speaking, glance up and look at an audience member in the face. Learn the technique of speaking 'to' the people, not 'at' them.

Other techniques and skills you need to bear in mind when you begin public speaking relate to the matter of your speech and the group of people you are aiming or directing your speech to. Is what you are doing a public speech about relevant to the age bracket or gender of people in your audience?

Also learn the techniques and the skills of bringing visual aids into your public speaking performance. You may need to use these to keep your audience interested, or in the very least give your speech a little added extra excitement, or maybe visual aids will simply just help you get your message across to your audience easier. Gain knowledge and the appropriate techniques to fit visual aids into the right place of your speech. If you lack the skills of knowing just when to introduce visual aids, you could end up killing your speech sooner than you want to.

Above I have gone into brief detail on a few skills and techniques you should consider when you get into public speaking. Below I will now provide for you a list of tips for public speaking that you can also bear in mind when you take on public speaking, either in the near or distant future.
