Golf Weight Training
By Jason Taingahue Most sports can benefit from weight training and this includes golf as well. Do you want to do some weight training for golf? If you just said yes to yourself after reading this question, then read on and I will explain to you how weight training can help your golf game.
The first thing that we need to do when wanting to be able to improve our golf game through weight training is take a look at the main movement of the golf game and that is the swing of the club.
We need to take a look at what muscles are used when swinging the club. Once we have established this, we can then go ahead and design an appropriate weight training program.
If we take a look at what muscles are used we will see that the torso or waist is used in the swing with the club. Also the lower back and the Drive of the shoulders are used too? The legs do not have to much influence in a golf swing, it is mainly the upper body that does all the work. So a list of all the muscles that we use is as follows. The lower back, the shoulders, the wrists, the torso or hips and the abdominal muscles too.
Some weight training exercises that we can use for golf could be as follows
Shoulders shoulder press, upright row
Back Lateral pull down, chin ups, seated rows
Wrists wrist curls
Biceps Bicep curls, preacher curls
Triceps close grip bench press, parallel dips
Abdominals crunches, side crunches, decline crunches
You don’t have to do all of these exercises while training either. Only one per muscle group is more than appropriate when using these in a training session, otherwise doing them all will lead to over training.
All these exercises can be manipulated to suit each individual golfer and would benefit any golfer wishing to improve his strength as well. If you are not familiar with any of these exercises then ask a local gym instructor or even a friend that knows how to do these movements. And make sure that you do them correctly or under the supervision of an exercise professional first so that you can develop the correct technique.
Also in most gyms they have cables that can be adjusted to heights that suit each individual. This is good for the golfer who wants to use weight training to improve his swing because he can then grab the cable the same way as he would the golf club and add some weight to the cable by changing the pin to the appropriate weight and then swing the cable like you would a golf club.
Remember to use warm ups and warm downs in your routine as well as well as a lot of stretching. And be sure to take a bottle of water to you when engaging in any exercise routine. Take a towel as well to wipe off sweat.
Some more good advice while in the gym weight training for golf is with any movement while weight training, make sure that you always bend your knees when going down to pick up a particular weight. This ensures that you are not putting to much stress on the lower back.
Also torso or hip twists from side to side are good as well. I mean after all this is how you hit the ball, by twisting the hips or torso from side to side as you enter your swing.
Well I hope that this lesson on golf weight training helps to improve your swing in general and also the strength in that swing too.
Golf is a game that never really had much to do with weight training to improve your golf. Nowadays weight training for golf is a lot more popular. As we can see people like tiger woods have benefited from it. So if he can, then so can you.
