By Leeanne Utiger As people we all have to deal with emotions in our lives. Emotions are varying feelings we experience. But do you know what the real definition of emotional inteligence is? Have you ever taken the time to sit back and reflect on what emotional intelligence does for you as a person. Are you aware of your level of emotional intelligence, or are you completely ignorant to emotional inteligence as a whole.
We all may have varying and different views and opinions on what emotional intelligence is. However this article will explain some of what emotional inteligence is about for those of you who really have no idea at all about emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence is associated with thought and how we perceive and understand things. Do you know that the phrase 'emotional inteligence has been around for approximately quarter of a century. Given that, you can imagine how many definitions have come from emotional inteligence over that period of time. So how do we know what definition of emotional intelligence is right and which definition of emotional intelligence is wrong? Quite simply put, there is no right, nor is there a wrong. There is simply the right definition of emotional inteligence for each individual.
In general however, the underlying definition of emotional intelligence is: 'the ability to control ones own and others feelings and emotions, to discriminate amongst them and to use this information to guide ones thinking and actions'. These words of definition regarding emotional inteligence came from two researchers, John Mayer and Peter Salovey.
In simple terms, the definition of emotional intelligence is to 'feel' what is going on in our lives, what makes us feel the way we do, what makes us sad, what makes us happy and what can change a situation to change the emotions we are feeling. The ability to 'see' these things is the definition of emotional inteligence.
However we have to understand that we hold a varied level of emotional inteligence, because we all have our own theories and opinions on situations that arise in every day life. If you understand yourself and are able to control your emotions and understand what causes each emotion you are defining the definition of emotional inteligence yourself. The most intelligent of people may hold very little emotional intelligence. This is because there is a difference between understanding yourself, being emotionally intelligent to having an abundance of intelligence relating to a science issue.
Holding emotional intelligence however is as important as holding intelligence on other issues that surround us in our every day life. Emotional intelligence can keep us stable and balanced sufficiently enough to move through life without too many mishaps and misunderstandings. If we lack emotional intelligence we can end up experiencing a lot of grief and confusement.
Basically the definition of emotional intelligence is to learn and know about ourselves as individuals. Understand why we feel the emotions we do at any given time and be able to control them or change them if need be.
