By Leeanne Utiger
Drug abuse, sadly is more common amongst women that are pregnant than what some of you may realize. Some women don't seem to grasp the concept that drug abuse during a pregnancy is not only harmful to themselves, but also to the unborn baby. A baby can become addicted to drugs you are taking and using. There are enough warnings around about drug abuse during a pregnancy and education these days warns expectant mothers just what drug abuse can do to an unborn baby.

Any woman that is addicted and abuses drugs during a pregnancy is running a high risk of giving birth to a baby that is already addicted to drugs. The baby has no say in this and sadly comes into the world with a drug addiction he or she then has to live with. Abusing drugs during a pregnancy can also cause serious health issues, defects and deformities in a baby who has been susceptible to his or her mother abusing drugs during the pregnancy. If you use drugs while you are pregnant, you in addition run the risk of causing severe disabilities in your baby, or even causing your own babies death. It is time some women stopped abusing drugs, cured their addiction and did something for themselves and their unborn baby before they cause too much damage to an innocent victim. Your baby becomes a victim of your abuse of drugs, your baby becomes addicted and is left with a lifetime of addiction.

Would you sit in your lounge at night and offer your 5 year old a joint? I would hope not. However pregnant women abuse drugs without a second thought to creating an addiction in an unborn baby.

Alcohol is classed as a drug as well. Therefore abuse of alcohol while a woman is pregnant can also affect the unborn baby and casue an addiction to a drug, and will often cause a condition called: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Alcohol abuse can also cause bad behavioral problems, along with poor physical development and possible mental retardation. Often ADHD is a secondary condition to a baby having Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Is this the kid of addiction you want your child growing up with? Do you want to have to explain to a teacher in teh future that your child is a drug addict?

Many women do not consider caffeine as a drug, or do not think an unborn baby can become addicted to it. Yet, once again, caffeine is in fact a drug and not good for an unborn baby. We as adults can become addicted to caffeine, so therefore an unborn baby can also become addicted to caffeine. It is suggested that if you are a coffee drinker, you try drinking hot chocolate instead to break the addiction to acffeine.

Another form of drug abuse during pregnancy is cigarette smoking. This can be a hard addiction to break away from, but for your baby is oen for the better. It is wise to quit smoking cigarettes during your pregnancy as they can cause harmful effects to your unborn baby. These can include: Low birth weight, Infant and Fetal Mortality, and even Childhood Respiratory Disease.

Other women during their pregnancies may however maybe be addicted to and even be abusing harder drugs like marijuana or cocaine. This is one addiction you most definitely do not want an unborn baby being delivered with. If you are pregnant and are abusing drugs such as these, you are writing your own unborn babies future health plan. Stop the addiction today. And believe me - that plan will not be a good one. You will only have yourself to blame for the consequences of your actions when you choose to abuse drugs, as opposed to taking care of yourself and giving birth to a healthy baby. Some women need to stop and think, that these unborn babies have a right to be healthy, they have a right to breathe without difficulties, they have a right to not be addicted to drugs at birth. If you as a women cannot do your best to make these possible, you should not even contemplate getting pregnant in the first place. If abusing drugs means more to you than a healthy vibrant baby, then don't get pregnant. It is that simple. Give a baby life - not a death sentence. Don't let a baby become addicted to what you have become addicted to!

If you abuse the harder drugs during a pregnancy you are leading your unborn baby into a life of hell. Disabilities and life long medical conditions is often what lies ahead for a baby that has been born to a mother who is drug dependant. These disabilities and medical conditions can include:
Aids
Hyperactivity
Poor sleeping patterns
Sudden infant Death Syndrome

Abusing these forms of hard drugs during a pregnancy can also cause malformations in the organs, limbs and facial features of the unborn baby.

Do you really want to run the risk of this happening to your baby during a pregnancy. This is a new life you are bringing into the world - a little treasure. Do not abuse this gift. Stop abusing drugs before you fall pregnant. That is the very least you can do.

Say no to drugs today!
