Calf Muscle Pain - Pulled Calf Muscle

By Jason Taingahue
Do you sometimes get calf muscle pain? Do you know what that pain is? If you don't really have an answer for these questions then read on and I will tell you what the some of the causes of calf muscle pain are. Also I will tell you what a pulled calf muscle is.

First of all to know what calf muscle pain is we must have a brief understanding of what the calf muscle is? The calf muscle is made up of two muscles, the gastrocnemius or main upper part of the calf muscle and the soleus which is the deeper or the lower calf muscle. Now that we know what the calf muscle is made up of lets take a look and see what sort of injuries can cause calf muscle pain.

Calf muscle pain can be attributed to a number of things such as if I was out on a long run and I ended up with calf muscle pain, this could be from repetitive strikes of the foot hitting the ground adding to pressure on the calf muscle. If this is the case then stretching and rest is the best cure.

Another form of calf muscle pain is stretching way beyond the calf muscles normal limit, this will make the muscles tweak and the tremendous pain will be felt. In this case, the recovery is just rest. You wont be able to stretch that calf muscle for a long time and it wouldn't be a silly idea to see a physiothrerapist as well.

Any kind of calf muscle pain should be reported to a exercise professional or even a doctor immediately, other wise you may be doing the calf muscle more harm then good if you carry on walking and exercising on it.

Ok now lets take a look at a pulled calf muscle. This is extremely sore and one of the main causes of a pulled calf muscle is an over stretch of the calf muscle itself. As I said up above the recovery is total rest and some physiotherapy work. The technique of stretching is to stretch to a comfortable state and don't stretch until it hurts because that is just asking for a pulled calf muscle.

Another reason for getting a pulled calf muscle is over working the calf muscle on the weights machine. Taking the calf muscle to a point where it is way off being comfortable. In weight training you can work hard, but work wisely as well and listen to your body. If it does not feel comfortable going to a certain point, then don't go there, its as simple as that. And if you do get a pulled calf muscle through weigh training, stop doing the weights immediately and tell your trainer.

And don't be embarrassed to tell the trainer as well, everyone who has done any physical activity at all is going to injure themselves and if they don't then they must be superman. And I still have yet to find anyone who is to fit that description.

The last thing that you need to know about pulled calf muscle is how to avoid it. The best way to avoid pulled calf muscle is to have a good decent warm up before a workout and then do some stretches on the calf muscles and do the same through the workout and then after the warm down at the end of the training session. This is the only way to reduce the chances of the area being injured, so practice it religiously.

Hope that the reading has extended your knowledge about injuries to the calf muscle and especially a pulled calf muscle, because a pulled calf muscle is the worst of them all.
